Northwood
Beacon

A public weather app that tells you what the forecast actually means for your day. Northwood Beacon, guiding you through the weather.

Not just numbers

Northwood Beacon explains the weather without pretending the weather is nicer than it is.

Northwood Beacon still shows proper forecast detail, but its main job is to make the weather understandable: when the braai window opens, whether the washing has a chance, when the wind becomes annoying, when storms cancel the clever plans, and when the better answer is a movie, cards, or a warm couch. The humour is there to make the app memorable. The forecast has to be honest enough to keep it trusted.

Beacon's Verdict

The first screen answers the question people actually ask: what should I do with this weather?

Beacon's Verdict

Braai after 16:00.

Light wind, low rain risk, and a comfortable evening make the late afternoon the best gap. If the forecast turns stormy, Beacon says so plainly and moves the plan indoors.

Plain-English weather

Daily explanations turn temperature, rain, wind, cloud, UV, and storms into simple guidance.

Traditional forecast detail

Weather cards still show the real forecast values, because trust needs evidence.

Weather with a bit of soul

The app speaks with a South African outdoor feel, but safety cancels jokes immediately.

Plan the day

Today, Tomorrow, Weekend, and a quick Week Glance.

Today

Immediate guidance for the selected Beacon, the user's saved spot, including the daily verdict, weather summary, best windows, and useful activity ideas.

Tomorrow

A practical look ahead so users can plan washing, walking, errands, golf, fishing, or the indoor backup before the day arrives.

Weekend

From Thursday onward, Northwood Beacon can help compare Saturday and Sunday without turning the screen into a spreadsheet.

Week Glance

Short daily summaries with temperature range and one practical shout, with tap-through into the full forecast view.

Leisure guidance

Northwood Beacon suggests useful plans only when the location and weather back them up.

The app is location-aware. A coastal Beacon is a saved spot near the sea, so it can care about beach, tides, sea breeze, sunburn, and fishing. A dam Beacon can care about fishing, paddling, and water-side wind. Mountain and Berg Beacons can care about mist, cold, storms, hiking, and camping. An inland town should not be told to go to the beach just because the weather looks good.

Leisure cards cover outdoor and indoor options: braai, laundry, dog walks, cycling, gardening, golf, hiking, fishing, stargazing, beach days, movies, board games, reading, baking, indoor projects, and the occasional strategic couch day when the weather is properly against outdoor ambition.

Saved places

Beacons are saved spots.

In Northwood Beacon, a Beacon is the branded name for a saved place. It can be home, a dam, a beach, a campsite, a farm gate, or any place the user wants weather guidance for.

Private Beacons

Private Beacons are saved spots such as home, farms, private dams, and personal places. They stay private to the user and are not listed for other people to find.

Public Beacons

Public Beacons are saved public places such as towns, beaches, dams, reserves, passes, and landmarks that can later be easier for other users to add.

Map picker

A built-in map picker helps users choose a place, search South African towns and landmarks, or use Auto GPS.

Offline-friendly weather

The latest saved forecast stays available when signal is poor, and the app refreshes when useful weather changes are available.

Opt-in alerts

Useful heads-up alerts, not noisy weather theatre.

Northwood Beacon is designed for opt-in alerts such as severe weather, rain heads-up, daily forecast guidance, weekend verdicts, and leisure windows. Serious weather is handled seriously: hail, lightning, dangerous storms, flooding, extreme wind, dangerous heat, and poor visibility are not joke surfaces.

Northwood Beacon is not an official warning service. It is a practical app that helps users understand NFI weather guidance, keep a better backup plan, and check the forecast evidence behind the recommendation.

Coming soon

Android first. Web later.

Northwood Beacon is being built as Northwood's public weather app, powered by NFI Northwood Forecast Intelligence. The Android app comes first, with a web version planned later once the app experience and NFI-powered guidance are ready.
